Launched alongside The Museum of Modern Art “Design and The Elastic Mind” exhibition, the Morph concept device is a bridge between highly advanced technologies and their potential benefits to end-users. This device concept showcases some revolutionary leaps being explored by Nokia Research Center (NRC) in collaboration with the Cambridge Nanoscience Centre (United Kingdom) – nanoscale technologies that will potentially create a world of radically different devices that open up an entirely new spectrum of possibilities.
Morph concept technologies might create fantastic opportunities for mobile devices:
* Newly-enabled flexible and transparent materials blend more seamlessly with the way we live
* Devices become self-cleaning and self-preserving
* Transparent electronics offering an entirely new aesthetic dimension
* Built-in solar absorption might charge a device, whilst batteries become smaller, longer lasting and faster to charge
* Integrated sensors might allow us to learn more about the environment around us, empowering us to make better choices.
In addition to the advances above, the integrated electronics shown in the Morph concept could cost less and include more functionality in a much smaller space, even as interfaces are simplified and usability is enhanced. All of these new capabilities will unleash new applications and services that will allow us to communicate and interact in unprecedented ways.
Flexible & Changing Design
Nanotechnology enables materials and components that are flexible, stretchable, transparent and remarkably strong. Fibril proteins are woven into a three dimensional mesh that reinforces thin elastic structures. Using the same principle behind spider silk, this elasticity enables the device to literally change shapes and configure itself to adapt to the task at hand.
A folded design would fit easily in a pocket and could lend itself ergonomically to being used as a traditional handset. An unfolded larger design could display more detailed information, and incorporate input devices such as keyboards and touch pads.
Even integrated electronics, from interconnects to sensors, could share these flexible properties. Further, utilization of biodegradable materials might make production and recycling of devices easier and ecologically friendly.
Self-Cleaning
Nanotechnology also can be leveraged to create self-cleaning surfaces on mobile devices, ultimately reducing corrosion, wear and improving longevity. Nanostructured surfaces, such as “Nanoflowers” naturally repel water, dirt, and even fingerprints utilizing effects also seen in natural systems.
Advanced Power Sources
Nanotechnology holds out the possibility that the surface of a device will become a natural source of energy via a covering of “Nanograss” structures that harvest solar power. At the same time new high energy density storage materials allow batteries to become smaller and thinner, while also quicker to recharge and able to endure more charging cycles.
Sensing The Environment
Nanosensors would empower users to examine the environment around them in completely new ways, from analyzing air pollution, to gaining insight into bio-chemical traces and processes. New capabilities might be as complex as helping us monitor evolving conditions in the quality of our surroundings, or as simple as knowing if the fruit we are about to enjoy should be washed before we eat it. Our ability to tune into our environment in these ways can help us make key decisions that guide our daily actions and ultimately can enhance our health.
Andy Warhol's prophecy was fulfilled with the advent of MTV's programming and widespread reality television. We're now seeing a new kind of micro-fame which lasts well beyond 15 minutes. You don't have to have thousands of friends on My Space, Facebook or Twitter to feel like a "Weblebrity"—you can be the celebrity of your own social system regardless of size. Here are the top 10 signs you just might be a Weblebrity. :-)
1. You have signature clothing such as a certain T-shirt, hat, tie, sunglasses, boas, and occasionally ascots.
2. At internet parties people follow a "drink for link" policy—they buy the drinks, you provide the links.
3. Your internet friends treat you like a star while your real friends tell you to go F@*k yourself.
4. You stopped thinking about yourself as a person years ago. Now you're a "brand".
5. At family gatherings you receive regular taunts like "can the internet superstar please pass the casserole??".
6. You've considered getting your Facebook photo shot professionally.
7. Total strangers you meet at conferences know more about you than your significant other.
8. You fight back the urge to say "do you know who I am?" almost daily.
9. People actually think you're friends with Scoble.
10. No-one in the real world has ever heard of you.

Whoa! That looks like a monster. It seriously seems as if that iPhone has its own Marshall half-stack. Neither the press release or the sell-sheet say how powerful those speakers are, but, hey, there are four of ‘em - so it’s gotta be loud, right?
Ok, ok, so they are only 2” speakers, but you probably weren’t looking for something to blow down your neighbor’s wall anyways. You might just be more interested in the fact that it works for both versions of the iPhone, along with any iPod that docks. Or perhaps it would be nice to know that the music automatically pauses when an incoming call is detected. Maybe it’s the auxiliary input or the FM receiver you’re looking for.
If you were looking for something to blow down your neighbor’s wall, you won’t find any help here. But you will find details from Altec Lansing about this docking system after the jump.
inMotion MAX Portable Digital Music System for iPhone and iPod
Tracing back to its roots as the first developer of the iPod docking system, Altec Lansing is launching the new inMotion MAX – a slim, portable, all-in-one music system designed to reproduce natural sound of the highest quality in its class. Using proprietary ESS technology, XdB bass-enhancement and twin precision-matched speakers, the new Altec Lansing inMotion MAX delivers sound unmatched by the competition and at a surprisingly large stereophonic range – easily filling any size room with rich, realistic, distortion-free audio.Compatible with Apple iPhone, Apple iPod and most MP3 players, the inMotion MAX speaker system automatically pauses music when a call is received on an iPhone. The inMotion MAX is fully immune to GSM and Wi-Fi signals – preventing the speakers from picking up potential intermittent noises emitted by the iPhone 3G, original iPhone or other mobile devices. The inMotion MAX supports iPhone and iPod alarm and sleep timer features and is additionally equipped with a built-in digital FM radio and high contrast LCD to display songs and FM station data (RDS). A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 3.5 hours of continuous play.
The Altec Lansing inMotion MAX (iMT702) system will be available October 2008 for $199.95 (U.S. MSRP).

Fed up with the "standard" Blackberry body design? Look no further!
Research In Motion is launching a flip version of its popular BlackBerry Pearl smartphone, a move that reasserts its push into the consumer market.
"Seventy percent of the mobile phone users in the United States use a flip," claims RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie. "There's never been a smartphone or a BlackBerry option for that."
He added the new device is "extremely important" for capturing more retail users.
The new clamshell flip BlackBerry will be available around the world starting this autumn. No pricing details were immediately available.
While I am not a fan of a flip phone, this could be good for someone who like a flip phone but needs Blackberry features.
Are you a Blackberry user who is looking to switch to this Flip phone?
The much anticipated successor to the N95 was officially announced by Nokia today at Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba. Yes, I am talking about the N96, which is expected to be available in stores from September 16.
We had a chance to get up close with the phone, and we thought we’ll give you a sneak preview of some of its most important features.
My first impression of the phone must be a pretty universal observation, which is its strong resemblance to the N81. It does look very much like the N81; but the width has been altered to accommodate a larger screen. The phone feels a bit heavy, even though it's shed some of the unnecessary flab of the N95.
The inbuilt speakers have been shifted to the bottom of the phone, and instead of the miniUSB interface (as in the N95), the N96 has microUSB, the new industry standard.
For those who were thinking of picking up the N95, let me highlight some of the differentiating factors between the two phones.
First of all, the N96 comes with a bigger 2.8-inch screen, larger than the 2.6 inches of the N95. The screen looks sharp as expected. Secondly, and perhaps the element that justifies the existence of the N96, is the inbuilt 16GB memory. I like it!
The N95 had a maximum of 8GB, but what certainly impresses me about the N96 is that you can extend the memory further to 24GB using a MicroSD card, which as you will know wasn’t even an option in the N95.
The camera continues to be a 5MP job, and a cursory run through it didn’t give me a feeling that it's any different. However, it’s now supplemented with two LED flashes.
The N96 is enabled with DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) and there’s a small antenna beneath the battery cover, just so that you know! The technology isn’t available in India yet, except in Delhi, that too on a very elementary level. DVB-H lets you watch your favorite TV channels on the phone, as and when it’s available.
The N96 is equipped with TV-out, which wasn’t bad when I checked it at the venue. Some problems were apparent, for the movie was framing. The 3.5mm jack still stays, and to start you off the phone comes bundled with 100 Hindi and English songs.
Everything else stays the same — Wi-Fi, GPS, Nokia Maps 2.0 (now with voice guidance). Only three country maps are preloaded: India, Singapore and UAE, with a three-month navigation license. In India, you get only eight cities: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Mumbai and Pune. The OS is S60 3rd feature pack, and it looks and feels as good as in the N95.

Apple Inc. updated the software that runs its iPhones on Friday in hopes of decreasing dropped calls, improving battery life and cutting the time it takes to synchronize the device with a computer.
Shortly after Apple made the new software available on its iTunes online service, some users offered positive feedback on Internet forums, saying it appeared the device was getting faster at handling key tasks. In contrast, an August update that was supposed to improve the iPhones' connectivity to high-speed data networks drew mainly negative responses claiming it didn't work.
Apple also said the new update "improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display" - meaning the phone would show more "bars" on the connection meter. However, the quality of the connection was not necessarily affected by the update.
Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple said the new software will also improve e-mail reliability and reduce crashing applications. Besides complaining about such bugs - which have given Apple's high-end reputation some relatively rare knocks - iPhone owners have grumbled about missing text messages. After the update is installed, the device will chirp its text message alert several times.

Symbian OS 9.1/9.2
Released early 2005. It includes many new security related features, particularly a controversial platform security module facilitating mandatory code signing. Symbian argues that applications and content, and therefore a developers investment, are better protected than ever, however others contend that the requirement that every application be signed (and thus approved) violates the rights of the end-user, the owner of the phone, and limits the amount of free software available.
The earlier versions had a fatal defect where the phone hangs temporarily after the owner sent hundreds of SMS'es. However, on 13 September 2006, Nokia released a small program to fix this defect.
